In April 2025, we established Bright Signals’ baseline carbon footprint using emissions data gathered between January and December 2024. At the same time, and as part of our commitment to making meaningful, sustainable change and supporting the Scottish Government’s Net Zero ambitions, we set up Bright Green.
Bright Green is our internal working group focused on setting goals and implementing practical improvements across the agency and beyond.
To calculate our baseline, we reviewed our office gas and electricity usage alongside the miles travelled by our team for work. This data was then converted into carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e), giving us a clear, consistent measure of our environmental impact.
Our reporting covers three areas of scope, outlined below. The figures below reflect our reporting position as of Q1 2026 and will be reviewed and updated annually as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and continuous improvement.
Scope 1: Direction Emissions.
Our company’s direct emissions, for e.g. gas supply emissions produced by heating
7.4tCO₂e
Scope 2: Electricity
Our company’s indirect emissions caused by the electricity purchased and consumed by our organisation.
2.2tCO₂e
Scope 3: Operations
Our company’s indirect emissions (not covered by Scope 2) that are produced by our business operations, basically everything else that we do that can have an impact on the environment.

Our Reduction Target
We aim to reduce our carbon footprint by 10% by 2030, bringing total emissions down to 17.63 tCO₂e based on our 2024 reporting baseline.
Notes on Year-on-Year Change
Compared to previous years, 2025 saw an increase in miles travelled for business purposes. However, our gas and electricity emissions are down from last year by 1.3 tCO₂e and 0.3 tCO₂e respectively
In addition, staff were able to provide more accurate data regarding their office commute. As a result, commuting emissions were included within our calculations for this reporting period, contributing to the overall increase compared to the previous year.
How have we produced this?
Data has been gathered and produced in compliance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, a globally recognised standard for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions.
Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in line with SECR requirements, while the relevant Scope 3 emissions have been recorded in accordance with the standards for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.
What's not included
We are currently not including the following data in our carbon emissions reporting due to the complexity of gathering consistent information and that there are too many variables.
- Additional goods and services
- Production shoots (we will calculate this separately)
Carbon Reduction Initiatives
Established and ongoing carbon reduction measures
- Compressed hours and hybrid working - reduces travel to work emissions, use of electricity, gas and water in the office
- Recycle and refurbish - we recycle as much of our waste as we can (but there's always room for improvement!) and always look into whether old equipment can be refurbished before recycling locally
- All ceiling lights are fitted with LED bulbs. Sensor lights have been installed in areas of the office where lights were often left on when not needed. Staff are encouraged to switch off lights in rooms when not required
- We take part in the ‘cycle to work’ scheme
- We only print when necessary, ink cartridges are returned to HP who recycle all of their used products
- We use local trades people and shop local whenever possible
- We request that all supplier invoices are emailed, we always choose paperless billing and download bank statements
- All employee documentation is digital
- When we moved in to Bright Towers, we installed the most energy efficient boiler and thermostat to suit our office needs. The thermostat is set to an energy efficient programme
- We bulk buy supplies for the office to reduce the number of trips to the shops
Initiatives within Production
We aim to align our production frameworks with BAFTA albert (the screen industry sustainability programme) and the Green Production Guide, embedding recognised best practice into our processes wherever possible.
- Use second-hand/repurpose clothes and props for the wardrobe and art department instead of buying new when possible
- Lift share to/from sets when possible
- Everyone is asked to bring reusable water bottles and hot flasks to set
- We hire local production crews and utilise local resources wherever possible, prioritising suppliers with verified sustainability credentials.
- Crew members travelling long distances are encouraged to use the train or bus instead of flights when possible
- Call sheets and agreements are all digital
Initiatives within Interactive
- Continue to lower the carbon cost of our sites by writing highly efficient, minimised code, hosted on carbon-neutral shared infrastructure (where possible)
- Utilise advanced techniques such as caching and content delivery to significantly lower the energy required to serve site content, wherever possible.
- Ensure that both accessibility and sustainability are key considerations when designing and developing our products.
- Continue to have all digital documentation.
Initiatives within Digital and Paid Media
- We use an in-house carbon calculator to monitor emissions associated with paid media activity.
